GEOMETRICAL OPTICS

OPTICS:

The branch of physical science that deals with the properties and phenomena of both visible and invisible light with vision.

The three major branches of optics are:

(1) Geometrical optics

(2) Physical optics

(3) Quantum optics

GEOMETRICAL OPTICS :

It is basically the study of light as rays. Light is postulated to travel along rays (line segment which are straight in free space but may change directions, or even curve, when encountering matter. In this, we study about the laws of reflection and refraction and how this is used to determine the behaviour of optical devices like telescope and microscope.

This is divided into four parts :

(1) Lenses

(2) Optical system and cardinal points

(3) Thick Lenses

(4) Optical Instruments
